Tasting notes
Pugnitello wine is characterized by a slightly herbaceous nose, while the palate reveals a full-bodied experience with high alcohol content, good acidity, and finely textured tannins.
It presents a complex array of fruit-forward aromas, such as cherry and blackberry, coupled with earthy notes of leather and soil. This combination makes Pugnitello a wine with significant aging potential and a robust companion to hearty Tuscan dishes.
Food pairing
The wine's bold profile complements grilled lamb, pork, or beef, bringing out the savory flavors of the meat.
Aged cheeses, such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano, create a delightful contrast with the wine's acidity and tannins.
Rediscovering an Ancient Tuscan Treasure
Pugnitello, a unique and rare grape variety indigenous to Tuscany, particularly in the province of Grosseto, derives its name from its small, fist-shaped clusters ("pugno" means fist in Italian). This variety was almost forgotten but has been revived due to its distinct characteristics and historical significance. Today, it is known for producing wines with intense ruby colors and violet hues, celebrated for their robust structure and complex aromatic profile.
Viticulture and Vinification
Mannucci Droandi's Pugnitello is cultivated on half a hectare of optimally exposed alluvial soil at 250 meters above sea level, ensuring excellent productive conditions. Vineyard practices are designed to enhance grape quality through minimal soil disturbance and precise canopy management. The grapes undergo a careful winemaking process, including prolonged maceration and fermentation in small vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels and further maturation in the bottle.
