Tasting notes
Barsaglina is known for its high anthocyanin and phenol content, making the wines intenselycolored and tannic. The grapes yield a ruby red wine with a full body and aromatic notes of berries, currants, and violets.
On the palate, the wine presents a good structure with potential for aging, thanks to its balanced acidity and complexity.
Food pairing
The wine’s robust tannins complement grilled meats like lamb, beef, or pork, enhancing the savory flavors and providing a satisfying balance.
Dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils, such as mushroom risotto or lentil stew, will complement the wine’s earthy undertones and vibrant acidity.
Aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino, or aged Gouda create a delightful contrast with the wine's tannins and enhance its fruity notes.
Serve Barsaglina at around 16-18°C to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and enjoy a true taste of Tuscan heritage.
Barsaglina from Mannucci Droandi
Rediscovering a Tuscan Heritage
Barsaglina, a rare and historically significant Tuscan grape, originally hails from the Massa Carrara province. First documented in the 19th century, Barsaglina was nearly lost to the wine world before efforts were undertaken to revive it due to its unique characteristics and historical value.
Today, it is celebrated for its deep color and the complex profiles it brings to wines, often blending beautifully with other varieties or shining on its own in varietal bottlings.
Viticulture and Vinification
Grown in a half-hectare of ideally positioned alluvial soil at Mannucci Droandi, Barsaglina benefits from an altitude of 250 meters. The estate focuses on maintaining high-quality grape production through minimal soil disturbance and targeted vineyard practices, such as short spurred cordon training and selective harvesting.
This meticulous care is evident in the winemaking process, where Barsaglina is fermented in small vats, allowing for prolonged maceration and careful management of the cap, which enhances the extraction of color and flavor.
Recommended Aging:
Best enjoyed while young to appreciate its fruity characteristics.
Mannucci Droandi's dedication to reviving and championing Barsaglina has not only enriched Tuscany's ampelographic landscape but also offered wine enthusiasts a taste of a nearly forgotten but now resurgent and vibrant part of Italian wine heritage.
