One theory is that the grape, once nearly extinct, was rediscovered and saved by shepherds who used sheep to help spread the grape to new vineyards. The sheep were particularly fond of the white grape, which the shepherds encouraged. Due to this close association with shepherds and sheep, the grape was named "Pecorino" to honor this past.
