Discover Abruzzo

A hidden gem in italy's wine landscape

Abruzzo, a hidden gem among Italy’s beautiful wine regions. Nestled at the foot of the Apenninesand stretching out to the Adriatic Sea, Abruzzo offers stunning landscapes, rich culture, and above all, an impressive wine production worth exploring.

Abruzzo: a wine-driven treasure

Abruzzo is best known for its fantastic natural beauty, with mountains, valleys, and the sea providing a varied terrain ideal for viticulture. The region has a long history of wine production with documented evidence dating back to ancient times. Abruzzo is home to many small family-owned wineries and cooperatives, where traditional methods are combined with modern winemaking techniques.

Pecorino: a unique treasure from Abruzzo

Pecorino is a unique white grape native to the Abruzzo and Marche regions. Known for its freshacidity, complex aromas of citrus, green apples, and herbs, and its ability to age elegantly, this grape has seen a renaissance in recent years and has become increasingly popular both nationally and internationally. The name "Pecorino" derives from the Italian word "pecora" meaning sheep, and is associated with the cheese "pecorino" traditionally made from sheep's milk.

Regarding the grape "Pecorino," there are various theories about its name. One theory is that the grape, once nearly extinct, was rediscovered and saved by shepherds who used sheep to help spread the grape to new vineyards. The sheep were particularly fond of the white grape, which the shepherds encouraged. Due to this close association with shepherds and sheep, the grape was named "Pecorino" to honor this past.

Montepulciano: Abruzzo's proud heritage

Montepulciano is another jewel in Abruzzo’s wine production. The Montepulciano grape thrives in Abruzzo's warm and dry climate, producing robust and full-bodied red wines. These wines are known for their deep ruby red color, intense aromas of dark berries, spices, and licorice, and their soft and mature tannins. Montepulciano wines are excellent companions and pair perfectly with the region's rustic cuisine.
